July 2001 Newsletter

29 July 2001

Hello again,

Just a short letter this time since the past month has been mercifully uneventful.  We've managed to avoid ailments recently and are enjoying what can only be described as fantastic summer weather. Unlike the past two summers which were marked by long stretches of hot and humid weather, this summer has been cool and enjoyable.  A bit more rain than usual - but wonderfully cool and breezy. Hope it lasts.

Patti recently picked up the game of golf - prompted by a couple of her friends. She gets out once or twice a week and seems to be improving day by day. We golfed together twice this month as well. Patti showed a great deal of patience with my natural tendency to provide advice where none is wanted. Patti also found time to pick up on old hobby - playing violin. She really enjoys playing again.

I'm scheduled for another business trip to Hawaii later in August (darn the luck). I'll have to leave Patti and Christopher behind for this one - but it will be for only one week. I'm also signed up to climb Mt Fuji for the second time on 9 August. Not sure how I got talked into it again - but at least I'm aware of the mental and physical challenge having survived it last year.

Christopher continues to grow like a weed and absorb information like a sponge. The terrific weather has enabled him to play hard outdoors all day long so we haven't been getting much resistance at bed time lately.  Christopher is also enjoying his Nintendo 64 with Super Mario 64. I'm amazed at his capacity to reason and solve challenges as well as his manual dexterity.  Who says video games are bad for you?  Festival season is in full swing in Japan and we're trying to take advantage of the opportunities. Last week we enjoyed the Misawa City Tanabata festival and tonight we are going to Kamaki's grand hotel for the Kappa festival.

Dad and Rosemarie arrive in Japan on 6 September so we are busy planning for their arrival. I hope to take several days of leave to enjoy numerous day trips. Current destinations on the itinerary are Hirosaki, Sendai, Cape Tappi, Aomori, and Mutsu Peninsula. The Misawa Air Festival is on 9 September so we'll have fun joining 200,000 other people on the flight line for that one.

For those in the know:

PCS season is in full swing so we're welcoming new members of the organization and sending others onto new challenges.  Teresa McLean departed earlier this month leaving me to run the civilian contingent here until her replacement arrives in late September.  Bill McCullough also departed earlier this month and I just spent a few days greeting his replacement Wayne Riegel. Wayne is a terrific guy who has already made numerous changes improving the outlook for the folks up here in Misawa. Some changes are good.

 Bye for now.

 Terry, Patti, and Christopher
